If you are like me, I exhaust every ounce of strength before I call upon God for help. When I misplace my keys, I go around the house like a chicken with its head cut off before it dawns on me, “Have you prayed about it?” If I’m going through a frustrating circumstance, my default mode is complaining to God or someone instead of praising Him. We are to rejoice always, pray without ceasing and give thanks for all things (1 Thess. 5:16-18). When, where, what, how and why do we access this great resource in the person of our heavenly Father instead of relying on human strategies?
When and Where Do We Access God?
If we never had troubles, we wouldn’t seek God. The Psalmist knew where to find help. He looked toward the sanctuary whenever trouble arose (Ps. 20:1-2). Today, we find access to God in our heart since we are temple of the Holy Spirit.
What Prerequisites Enable Us to Access God?
The meal and burnt offerings listed in Ps. 20:3 signify a total surrender and sacrifice of our lives to God where we desire divine, not human support. God will fulfill our purpose if we seek Him above anything else. Deliverance from trouble doesn’t come externally, but from our innermost being where God dwells (Ps. 20:4).
How Do We Access God?
We find true joy, freedom and prosperity from God. He demonstrates love in action through answered prayer (Ps. 20:5-9). Our prayers and praise to God show that He is king instead of human resources designed to make our life more comfortable. I believe trouble facilitates a refocusing of our eyes on Christ and not creature comforts that so easily distract us.
Why Do We Access God?
Troubles allow us to find our joy and strength in our relationship with God (Ps. 21:1-3). Real life comes in answer to prayer. So much of our lives are wrapped around possessions, power or prestige (Ps. 21:4). We are deceived in thinking that exercise, cosmetics money, position and connections buy beauty, honor and glory. We obtain them as a gift in answer to prayer.
To be a committed prayer warrior, he or she must see God as the exalted and Supreme Being of the universe (Ps. 21:7). Those who walk with God trust Him to defeat any enemy or obstacle thwarting the fulfillment of His will (Ps. 21:8-13).
